Fragment dintr-o scrisoare scrisă în 4 Septembrie 1919, Vevey, Elveția

"Nu trebuie să căutăm în Scriptură justificare pentru gândurile noastre, ci noi să ne corectăm gândurile prin Cuvânt. Nici un cuvânt din Scriptură nu îl încuviinţează pe un credincios să voteze.

Cel credincios nu este din lume, după cum nici Domnul nu este din lume (Ioan 17:14,16 ): „Cetăţenia noastră este în ceruri“ (Filipeni 3:20 ). În Epistola către Romani 13:1-7 , ni se descriu care sunt datoriile noastre civice, datoriile de străini în mijlocul lumii: a fi supus autorităţilor (ceea ce nu înseamnă să le stabileşti) şi a-ți plăti impozitele. Dacă mă va obliga cineva să votez, voi pune un buletin de vot în alb.

Autoritatea este hotărâtă de Dumnezeu. Eu trebuie s-o recunosc, dar nu să o stabilesc; ea este de la Dumnezeu, indiferent în ce mâini se află. În timpul apostolului Pavel, această autoritate se afla în mâinile lui Nero - cel mai teribil dintre împăraţii romani, un tiran, un despot. Sub domnia lui, Pavel a spus: „Oricine să fie supus stăpânirilor celor mai înalte; căci nu există stăpânire care să nu vină de la Dumnezeu“ (Romani 13:1 ).

Se va spune că noi nu mai suntem sub o putere despotică, ci suntem democraţi, republicani etc. Dar, în democraţie, poporul este suveran însă cel credincios nu este sub nicio formă suveran în lumea din care nu mai face parte; el este străin, pentru că este din cer. Ori cel care votează face un act de suveranitate şi nu de supunere.

Lumea se află într-un curent al răului care nu se va putea opri decât prin judecata lui Dumnezeu, aşa că niciun om credincios nu va putea opri curentul răului. Numai Dumnezeu poate să Se servească de autorităţi, pentru că acestea sunt de la El; El le va menţine, dar nu este treaba noastră să le stabilim.

Tot sistemul lumii reprezintă o stare de lucruri, iar cel credincios se află în afara acestui sistem. Însuşi Domnul este în afară şi va fi până când va lua în mână împărăţia Sa, începând cu exercitarea judecăţilor asupra acestor stări de lucruri. În mijlocul lor, noi suntem martori, dar nu facem parte din ele.

El a spus: „Împărăția Mea nu este din lumea aceasta“ (Ioan 18:36 ). A pune întrebarea: „Trebuie un creştin să voteze?“ , este o dovadă de pierdere a mărturiei; altădată în mijlocul fraţilor n-ar fi fost ridicată o asementea întrebare. Mărturia înseamnă să rămâi despărțit de lume și dependent numai de Dumnezeu."
